HC Deb 13 July 1908 vol 192 cc375-6
MR. SMEATON (Stirlingshire)

To ask the Secretary of State for War whether he has considered the expediency of a proposal recently made by the Chief Constable of Denbighshire to train the police force of the United Kingdom in rifle shooting, and thereby utilise the 40,000 drilled and disciplined men as an auxiliary to the Territorial Army in Home defence.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Haldane.) This proposal has been considered; but, in view of the fact that during an invasion the police would be urgently required to maintain law and order, it can hardly be held to be a practical proposal.
