HC Deb 09 July 1908 vol 192 c46
SIR THOMAS ESMONDE

To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland if Irish workhouse teachers will be allowed to share in the grant for the increase of the salaries of Irish National school teachers.

(Answered by Mr. Birrell.) The reply is in the negative. No charge in respect of the teachers of Poor Law union schools has ever been borne on the Vote for public education. Such teachers are in the service of the boards of guardians and are paid out of the local rates.
