HC Deb 02 July 1908 vol 191 c961
MAJOR RENTON (Lincolnshire, Gainsborough)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what extra labour was entailed on the Metropolitan Police, and at what cost to the public, if any, on 30th June by their duties in carrying out the sessional order prohibiting meetings in the vicinity of the Houses of Parliament.

MR. GLADSTONE

1,694 extra police were employed on 30th June, but I am not able to state what was the total amount of extra labour involved. The cost to the public is represented by the expenses of travelling incurred by men brought in from distant places, and by the payment of refreshment allowance to those on duty for nine hours or more. This has not yet been ascertained.
