HC Deb 27 February 1908 vol 185 c42
SIR GEORGE SCOTT ROBERTSON

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies how many of His Majesty's Indian subjects are counted in the estimate of the native population of British East Africa; how many of them are soldiers and police; how many are farmers, agricultural labourers, or coolies; and how many are traders or land speculators.

MR. CHURCHILL

I have no exact figures of the number of British Indians in the East Africa Protectorate, but the number of alien and resident strangers exclusive of Europeans, was given in the Blue-book for the year 1905–1906 as 10,763. I have no information in regard to the number of Indians employed in the various capacities mentioned, except that there are no Indian soldiers in East Africa, though in Uganda there are 200 Indian troops.
