§ MR. BRIDGEMANI beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board what was the amount contributed in rates, according to the latest Returns, for Poor Law, police, main roads, asylums, and education by personal property and real property, respectively.
§ MR. JOHN BURNSIt is not practicable to give the information desired. As the hon. Member is no doubt aware, the rates are levied on the occupiers of real property. The question of the ultimate incidence of rates is one which has been much discussed, but I am afraid I cannot deal with it within the limits of a Question. I may, however, refer the hon. Member to the report of the Royal Commission on Local Taxation and the papers published with that Report.
