§ MR. REESI beg to ask the Secretary of State for India what percentage of the inhabitants of India are at present in receipt of famine prevention relief; and how that percentage compares with the percentage of persons in receipt of outdoor relief in Great Britain.
§ MR. MORLEYAccording to the latest information about 740,000 persons are in receipt of famine relief in the whole of India including native states. Calculated on a total population of 300,000,000 the ratio is about one quarter of 1 per cent. But the ratio would, of course, be much higher if struck on the population of the districts where the crops have failed and the provision of the Famine Relief Codes are in force. The ratio of paupers in receipt of outdoor relief to the inhabitants of England and. Wales was stated to be a little over 1½ per cent. in 1907.
