Member for South Somerset, as representing the President of the Board of Agriculture, who is responsible for the quality of the paper on which the Ordnance maps in Ireland are now printed or engraved; were the Ordnance maps until recently printed or engraved in Ireland, and where are they now done; and, having regard to the number of these maps now required in connection with land purchase, will he represent to the proper authority that they should be printed or engraved on paper on which ink and colours will not run, the paper at present in use being little more than blotting paper.
(Answered by Sir Edward Strachey.) The Director-General of the Ordnance Survey is responsible for the quality of the paper on which the Ordnance maps in Ireland are printed. So far as it is possible all maps of Ireland are prepared and printed in Ireland, but no facilities exist at the Ordnance Survey Office in Dublin for printing in colours, and printing of that class is therefore carried out at Southampton. If the hon. Member will let me know the particular maps of which he complains, we should be glad to make inquiry into the matter.
