§ MR. STAVELEY-HILL (Staffordshire, Kingswinford)To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he will state the number of persons reported as having taken part in cattle-drives after being bound to keep the peace and to be of good behaviour; and in how many cases have applications been made by the Crown to estreat the recognisances of such persons, and with what result.
(Answered by Mr. Birrell.) I am informed that two cases only have been reported in which persons who have been bound to the peace have again taken part in cattle-driving. In one of the cases the recognisances of the person concerned were ordered to be estreated. In the other case some of the owners whose cattle were driven took part themselves in the drive; and it was decided that proceedings could not be successfully taken in the case. One of the persons identified had been bound to the peace in connection with a previous case of cattle-driving; but in the circumstances no action to estreat his recognisances was taken.
