HC Deb 06 February 1908 vol 183 c1079
MR. BYLES (Salford, N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, having regard to the Resolution unanimously passed by this House on 20th March last, on the Motion of the hon. Member for Bethnal Green, he is prepared with any proposal to check the growing judicial practice of committing debtors to prison.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. GLADSTONE,) Leeds, W.

The Government propose to refer the question of imprisonment for debt to a Select Committee.

MR. BYLES

Is there not a steady increase of committals year by year? Is it not time some action was taken on a unanimous Vote of the House of Commons passed a year ago?

MR. GLADSTONE

The Vote was given on the undertaking that the Government would refer the Question to a Committee.
