HC Deb 06 February 1908 vol 183 cc1090-1
MR. BRIDGEMAN

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Education whether it is proposed to make a grant out of the fund provided in the Appropriation Act of 1907 for schools at Gwersyllt, Denbighshire, and at Flint to make good a numerical deficiency of public elementary accommodation.

MR. MCKENNA

No grants will be made to make good a numerical deficiency of public elementary school accommodation.

MR. BRIDGEMAN

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Education, whether inquiries have been held with regard to the applications for grants out of the fund provided by the Appropriation Act, 1907, to build new schools at Penycae, Minera, Llantysilio, Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr, Pontfadoc, and Bylchan, in the county of Denbigh, and at Gwaenysgor, in Flintshire; and if the ratepayers or parents who objected to the proposal were heard.

MR. MCKENNA

No, Sir. All appeals against the provision of new public elementary schools are carefully considered by the Board, who are empowered, if they think fit, to hold a public inquiry to assist them in arriving at a decision. It is not, however, and never has been the practice of the Board to hold an inquiry in every case irrespective of whether the particular circumstances appear to require it.

MR. BRIDGEMAN

Have there been any inquiries in this particular case?

MR. MCKENNA

I cannot say, but if inquiries appear to the Board to be necessary they will be held.

MR. BOWLES

As a matter of fact has an inquiry been held in any case of an application for a grant?

MR. MCKENNA

I am under the impression that there have been several.
