I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies if he can state the number of Chinese who were repatriated from South Africa during the year 1907.

The numbers repatriated were:—

During the first quarter 1,188
During the second quarter 1,947
During the third quarter 5,051
During the fourth quarter 10,876
Total for the twelve months 19,062

May I ask whether these Chinese have been replaced by native labour?

Yes, Sir. Up to the present their places have been much more than filled by native labour.
