§ MR. JOWETT (Bradford, W.)To ask the Postmaster-General if he is aware that extra men are being engaged for the Christmas traffic at the Bradford office at 5d. per hour, and if the sum named is lower than it has been the practice to pay at the Bradford office to extra men for similar work.
(Answered by Mr. Sydney Buxton.) As I have stated in reply to other Questions in this House recently, the rates of pay for casual labour at Christmas will be based, as far as possible, on the rates recommended by the Select Committee for auxiliary service. Besides the fixed rate, the men receive special pay for night work, for Christmas Day, and Boxing Day, and get overtime pay where it has to be worked. The general net result of the alteration will be an increase in the total amount of pay. Under this scale the rate of pay at Bradford is 5¼d. an hour.
