HC Deb 15 December 1908 vol 198 cc1544-5
MR. BOWERMAN (Deptford)

To ask the Postmaster-General whether men are being engaged at the South-Eastern Parcels Office, Union Street, E.C., at wages less than 24s. per week; and whether he will take steps to bring the wages of these men in harmony with the promise given by the Prime Minister on 26th October last.

(Answered by Mr. Sydney Buxton.) The only officers at the South-Eastern Parcel Office to whom the hon. Member's Question can refer are the Christmas casual sorters during the short period of training. These men have to acquire some knowledge of sorting before any practical use can be made of their services. For a few day's they are paid at the rate of 20s. a week. After passing the test, they are paid at the rate of 24s. a week.
