I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War what steps have been taken to cope with the shortage of officers in the cavalry as shown in the Return recently laid before Parliament.

The present shortage stands at thirty-one. The majority of these vacancies will be filled in the ordinary course. The system of appointing probationers for cavalry is being continued, but it is not expected that more than three will be appointed.
