HC Deb 02 April 1908 vol 187 c700
MR. J. F. MASON

I beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the fact that the amount derived from import duties of all kinds per head of the population is 50 per cent. higher in the United Kingdom than in Germany, and that, in the case of the United Kingdom, they are raised wholly on articles of general consumption, he will consider the desirability of reducing the taxes on food in this country and of making up the balance by levying duties on manufactured articles coming from abroad.

MR. ASQUITH

No, Sir.
