HC Deb 08 May 1907 vol 174 c218
MR. O. C. PHILIPPS (Pembroke and Haverfordwest)

I beg to ask the Under secretary of State for the Colonies whether it is now possible to announce the decision of His Majesty's Government with regard to the question of Imperial assistance to the island of Jamaica.

MR. CHURCHILL

His Majesty's Government have decided, in answer to the representations which have been made on behalf of Jamaica, to make a free grant of £150,000 in aid of the sufferers from the earthquake in that island, and also to make a loan of £800,000 to the Colonial Government mainly for rebuilding purposes. A supplementary Estimate providing for the sum of £150,000 will be laid before the House as soon as possible, and when the terms of the loan have been finally settled, they will be embodied in a Bill.
