HC Deb 06 May 1907 vol 173 cc1356-7
MR WHITEHEAD (Essex, S.E.)

I beg to ask the Prime Minister whether, in view of the proposal in the Territorial and Reserve Forces Bill to entrust military responsibilities to the lords-lieutenant and the national importance thereby attached to this office, the Government will introduce legislation securing that the office shall no longer be hold for life, but shall, like other military appointments, be subject to an age limit, and shall be made only for a term of years renewable at the option of the Crown.

SIR H. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN

It is impossible at this early stage to answer this Question in detail. The question whether a change should be made is receiving consideration.
