HC Deb 01 May 1907 vol 173 cc885-6
MR. LONSDALE

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he has any particulars of the affray which took place on Saturday near Killarney; whether a body of men attacked four bailiffs who were attempting to distrain some cattle for rent, and two of the bailiffs were seriously injured; and what action he proposes to take in reference to this matter.

SIR BERKELEY SHEFFIELD

May I at the same time ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he has received a police report concerning an attack made on Saturday night, the 27th inst., near Killarney, by a body of men armed with pikes and pitchforks, upon Lord Kenmare's bailiffs, who were engaged in attempting to distrain some cattle for rent; and whether any arrests have been made on account of this assault.

MR. BIRRELL

I have received police reports as to this occurrence. It is alleged that one man —not a body of men — attacked the bailiffs with a pitchfork. This man has been arrested, and the proceedings against him are pending. In the circumstances it would be undesirable to enter into details. This Answer applies also to the similar Question of the hon. Member for the Brigg Division.

MR. FLYNN

Is it not the fact that an execution was being made for a half year's rent, when the bailiffs fired shots on the people, who simply defended themselves?

[No Answer was returned.]
