COURTHOPEOn behalf of the Junior Member for the City of London, I beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works what are the principal items accounting for the estimated increase of £3,645, required during the next financial year for the maintenance and protection of ancient monuments in Great Britain.
THE FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS Mr. Harcourt, Lancashire, Rossendale)The excess is mainly accounted for by necessary works of maintenance and repair at Carnarvon Castle and Stirling Castle, which we have recently taken over, and by the provision of lightning conductors on many buildings already in our charge. I hope the hon. Baronet will allow me to postpone the further details till I give them in the discussion of these Estimates shortly after Easter.
