HC Deb 30 July 1907 vol 179 c760
Sir GILBERT PARKER (Gravesend)

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what are the conditions under which British subjects, white and coloured, may undertake to do unskilled work in the mines of the Transvaal.

The UNDER - SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. CHURCHILL,) Manchester, N.W.

The special restrictions imposed by the Labour Importation Ordinance apply to the classes specified in the Ordinance, viz.: non-Europeans other than Africans south of twelve degrees north of the equator introduced under contract for work in the mines. No similar restrictions apply to other British subjects.

Sir GILBERT PARKER

asked if the Government had taken any steps to remove this disability from British labour.

MR. CHURCHILL

A provision was inserted in the Transvaal constitution which will have the effect of abrogating it.
