ALDEN (Middlesex, Tottenham)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is in a position to state to what extent goods are imported into the Congo Free State by way of the Nile; whether arms and ammunition are included in such consignments; and if so, whether the Egyptian Government have full information on the subject.
§ SIR E. GREYI am not aware of the extent of trade in general merchandise; arms and ammunition are imported under the provisions of the Brussels Act which apply to such traffic; and the Egyptian 1355 and Soudanese authorities possess the requisite information.
