§ MR. SLOANTo ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies if any steps have been taken to compensate the farmers
† See(4) Debates, clxxiv, 957.1140 and landowners of St. Helena, who, acting on the advice of Crown officials, invested their all in cattle and land in order to provide for the troops, now withdrawn, the result of which has been ruin to farmers.(Answered by Mr. Churchill.) There is no official record of any advice given by Crown officials in the sense indicated in the hon. Member's Question; therefore, while sympathising with the difficulties in which the farmers find themselves, His Majesty's Government have not felt able to deal with their case differently from that of other members of the community.
