HC Deb 03 July 1907 vol 177 cc684-5
SIR WILLIAM BULL (Hammersmith)

To ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer whether some steps will be taken to expedite the settlement of claims for refund of income-tax, in view of the fact that claims which have been under consideration for more than six months are still unsettled, no explanation being given by the Board of Inland Revenue of the delay.

(Answered by Mr. Asquith.) If particulars are furnished of cases in which long and unexplained delay has occurred, inquiry will he made in regard to them. Beyond this the Board of Inland Revenue can only say that every effort has been, and is being, made to deal expeditiously with claims for refund of income-tax.

SIR WILLIAM BULL

To ask Mr. Chancellor of the Excehquer whether, in the case of securities standing in names other than that of the claimant where the Board of Inland Revenue require documentary evidence in support of a claim for the refund of income-tax, and when there exists no trust deed, will, or settlement, he will give instructions that the particular nature of the document which they would accept should be supplied to the claimant so that he might have the same prepared.

(Answered by Mr. Asquith.) The nature of the document cannot be prescribed in general terms, but must depend upon the particular circumstances of each case, which, if there be any doubt or difficult' as to what is required, should be represented to the Board, who will then be ready to give any assistance in their power.
