HC Deb 01 July 1907 vol 177 c368
MR. WEIR

I beg to ask the Secretary for Scotland whether he is aware that, although the local authority in the Island of Lewis has for some years imposed the maximum assessment of Is. per pound for public health purposes, it is quite unable, owing to lack of funds, to give effect to the recommendation of the Report by Dr. Dittmar, medical inspector for the Local Government Board for Scotland; and will he state why the Board have taken no steps to see that the Public Health (Scotland) Acts are not ignored in this part of the United Kingdom.

MR. SINCLAIR

I am aware and I am convinced that under these circumstances it is impossible at present to exorcise further pressure upon the local authority.

MR. WEIR

Do the Local Government Board intend to pay no regard to this matter at all? Am I to understand that?

MR. SINCLAIR

No, Sir. The Local Government Board cannot exercise further pressure.

MR WEIR

I will put another Question.
