HC Deb 20 February 1907 vol 169 cc850-1
MR. FLYNN

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether the Department of Agriculture propose to abandon the experimental farm at Glenfield, Liscarroll, county Cork; if so, what are the reasons which actuate the Department in taking this course; was the farm worked at a loss; and, if so, what was the amount of the alleged loss; and whether, in view of the importance of these experimental farms to an agricultural community, the Department will reconsider the matter, and meantime consult the Kanturk Rural District Council before taking final action.

MR. BIRRELL

The farm at Glenfield was taken by the Department of Agriculture with a two-fold object, (1) to demonstrate that the disease of white scour in calves can be prevented, and (2) that cheese can be successfully made in Ireland. These objects have been attained, and the farm has accordingly been surrendered. The question of profit or loss did not influence the Department in discontinuing the farm, and as a matter of fact the cheese making proved to be profitable.
