HC Deb 20 February 1907 vol 169 c835
MR. J. RAMSAY MACDONALD

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the assistant factory inspectors appointed to examine docks will be empowered to attend inquests.

MR. GLADSTONE

The arrangements for attendance at inquests in any district rest with the inspector in charge of the district, who has power to direct the assistant to attend in any case in which he considers it necessary or desirable.

MR. J. RAMSAY MACDONALD

In view of the new duties imposed on the assistant inspectors, is this rule to remain in force?

MR. GLADSTONE

I do not quite see in what direction it can be altered. The assistant must necessarily be under the authority of the inspector, and it will rest with the latter to decide whether or not he shall attend the inquest. †See Col. 552.
