§ MR. WEDGWOOD (Newcastle-under-Lyme)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, with reference to the 489 aliens rejected from landing during the first twelve months working of the Aliens Act, whether he can state what has been the cost during the same period of the alien immigration committees, officers, and all other charges involved in the working of the Aliens Act,
§ *MR. GLADSTONEThe payments from the Sub-heads of the Home Office Vote which relate to the administration of the Aliens Act actually made in respect of the year ended December 31st, 1906, amount to £11,445 13s. 10d., to which must be added about, £350 for outstanding accounts, giving a total charge of about £11,800. I may say that the effect of the Act is not to be judged from the mere figures showing the alien immigrants to whom leave to land has been refused.
