HC Deb 29 April 1907 vol 173 cc501-2
MR. LONSDALE (Armagh, Mid.)

To ask the Chief Secretaryto the Lord- Lieutenant of Ireland whether he can give the House any information respecting the riotous proceedings at Carrick-on-Shannon on Thursday last, and state whether any persons have been arrested in connection with the disturbances.

(Answered by Mr. Birrell.)On the occasion in question, which was market day in Carrick-on-Shannon, several contingents with bands attempted to enter the town, with the object, as the police believed, of intimidating persons who had taken grazing lands. The policewarned the persons concerned that they would not be allowed to enter the town, and, upon their persisting, prevented them from doing so. Some disturbances took place, but the police succeeded in achieving their object. No arrests were made, but the evidence available against certain persons is under consideration, with the object of deciding its sufficiency to ground a prosecution.
