HC Deb 25 April 1907 vol 173 c277
MR. PIKE PEASE

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade if ho can state what is the average rate of duty on British exports under the general, preferential, and intermediate tariffs respectively of Canada.

THE SECRETARY TO THE BOARD OF TRADE (Mr. KEARLEY,) Devonport

The British preferential rates are on the average about 30 per cent. lower and the intermediate rates about 10 per cent. lower than the general rates of duty under the Canadian tariff. The Board of Trade are not, however, in a position to give an exact figure showing what would be the average rate of duty on British exports if they were subjected to the general, preferential, and intermediate tariffs respectively.

MR. PIKE PEASE

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the average rate given to foreign countries is in the Blue Book?

MR. KEARLEY

Yes, but the tariff has changed since then.
