I beg to ask the Secretary to the Admiralty how many of the total number of men voted for the effective naval service of the year are borne a any given time in ships fully commissioned, in ships with nucleus crews on shore in barracks, and otherwise disposed of in shore establishments.

The approximate number borne on the 25th ultimo was 127,277 Of this total 108,826 ranks and ratings were distributed among the four heads mentioned in the Question as follows:— In ships fully manned, 58,918; in ships with nucleus crews, 18,979; on shore in barracks, 23,403 (including 7,008 on the shore strength of the Royal Marines); otherwise disposed of in shore establishments, 7,526. The remainder (18,451) were borne in gunnery and torpedo school ships, training ships, etc.
