HC Deb 17 April 1907 vol 172 cc1000-1
MR. JOHN REDMOND

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland if a post to be called the Travelling Veterinary Surgeon for Ireland is about to be created by the Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction; whether in view of the fact that the efficiency of the Department, its organisation and work, are at present the subject of inquiry by a Committee, he will consider the advisability of delaying the creation of this post until the Committee have reported, and the measure for the better government of Ireland is introduced; and whether he will also consider the advisability, in case such a post is created, of providing that no competent man will be denied the opportunity of competing for it.

MR. BIRRELL

I understand that no now post of the description mentioned is to be created. The ordinary transit inspection staff of the Department of Agriculture is to be increased from four to five inspectors, in order to provide for the more effective discharge of the work to be done. It is proposed to fill this post by promotion from the veterinary staff already in the service of the Department. It does not appear to be necessary to await the Report of the Committee before making the appointment.
