HC Deb 11 April 1907 vol 172 c373
MR. SMEATON (Stirlingshire)

I beg to .ask the Secretary for Scotland whether the store warder in Dundee prison has recently been promoted to be governor of Greenock prison; if so, will he say whether due consideration was given to the qualifications of other warders of equal merit and longer service; and on what grounds the Dundee warder was singled out for exceptional promotion over the heads of other meritorious warders senior to him in the service.

THE SECRETARY FOR SCOTLAND (Mr. SINCLAIR,) Forfarshire

The promotion as stated by my hon. friend has been made. After due consideration had been given to the qualifications of other warders, both as to merit and length of service, this officer was selected.

MR. WATT

Was this appointment made on the initiative of the Prisons i Board or on that of the right hon. Gentleman?

MR. SINCLAIR

It was made on my responsibility after consultation with the Prisons Board.
