§ MR. SLOANTo ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland if he can state how many schools there are under Roman Catholic management with salary withdrawn over neglect to carry out repairs; how long are such schools suspended before finally struck off; whether salary will be paid in full, including back salary, when repairs are executed; whether schools during suspension are liable to annual inspection as other schools.
(Answered by Mr. Bryce.) The Commissioners of National Education inform me that within the last three years salary has been withdrawn, for the reason mentioned, from eight schools under Roman Catholic management. There is no fixed rule as to the length of time which must elapse before such schools are finally struck off. Each case is dealt with according to circumstances. When repairs have been executed, the question of restoration of salaries and of the amounts to be paid is considered by the Commissioners. Schools under suspension of grants are liable to inspection.
