I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies if the Government have any information in reference to cotton growing experiments in Australia; and whether any encouragement will be † See (4) Debates, clxiv., 1483–4. ‡ See (4) Debates clxiv, 521. given to such experiments, in view of the fact that the soil and climate in certain portions of Australia are suitable for cotton-growing.

I have no definite information on this subject, but I understand that the Commonwealth Government are considering the question of offering facilities for the encouragement of cottan-growing in Australia.
