HC Deb 21 November 1906 vol 165 c818
MR. VINCENT KENNEDY (Cavan, W.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that a number of pensioners, ex-soldiers, or reservists, and militiamen are at present permanently or periodically occupying the 159 unions in Ireland; is he aware that these men invariably conceal their identity lest their pensions might be attached; and will he take steps to prevent these men avoiding their obligations and thus lessen the burden of local taxation.

MR. HALDANE

I am aware that the system of fraud referred to exists, but I am afraid that I have no means of preventing it unless I am furnished with sufficient information to enable the pensioners to be identified.

MR. FLAVIN (Kerry, N.)

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider the advisability of housing all these pensioners in a central institution supported by the State?
