HC Deb 07 November 1906 vol 164 cc539-40
MR. HOOPER (Dudley)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is able to ascertain and report to the House the number of accidents, distinguishing between fatal and non-fatal, that occurred during the year 1905 at docks, wharves, and quays through defective lifting tackle.

*THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (MB. GLADSTONE, Leeds, W.)

The number of accidents in 1905 at docks, wharves, and quays which were due to lifting tackle moved by mechanical power was 1,221, of which 39 were fatal. I regret that I am unable to say how many of these were caused by actual defects in the tackle, and the information would be difficult to obtain. The Chief Inspector informs me, however, that fuller note is being taken of dock accidents during the current year with a view to more detailed classification, and that he hopes to give in next year's report figures of accidents due to defects in tackle moved by power. Particulars are not available as to accidents due to tackle not moved by power.
