§ MR. KEIR HARDIEI beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board whether his attention has been called to the Motion authorising the payment out of moneys to be provided by Parliament of an additional annual grant, not exceeding £1,000,000, to be distributed among local educational authorities, to meet the cost arising out of an Act of the present session to make further provision in respect to education in England and Wales; and whether he is prepared to recommend a grant for a similar amount to be distributed among local distress committees, to enable them to make further provision with respect to providing work for the unemployed, in pursuance of the promised Act of the present session dealing with distress due to lack of employment.
§ THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. JOHN BURNS,) BatterseaI am aware of the 414 Motion referred to in the Question. The circumstances in which the Government propose that the new education grant should be made differ, I think, from those affecting the other matter mentioned by my hon. friend, and I am afraid that I could not promise to make the recommendation which he suggests.
§ MR. KEIR HARDIEI will call attention to this matter later on to-day.
