§ MR. WEIR (ROSS and Cromarty)To ask the Secretary for Scotland if he will state how many houses in the Island of Lewis are rated, and how many not rated.
(Answered by Mr. Sinclair.) The exact numbers are not available. The 1902 Report on the social condition of the people of Lewis estimates the number of cottars who would not appear on the valuation roll, and therefore not to be rated, at from 900 to 1,000, the remainder are to be found in the valuation roll, and are no doubt rated for local purposes. The same Report gave the number of crofter holdings on the roll as 3,076.
