HC Deb 22 May 1906 vol 157 cc1127-8
MR. O'GRADY

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether he will inform the House of the amount of the annual grants from the Indian Exchequer for elementary education purposes in India, and the number of children attending public elementary schools in the country during the last year for which statistics are available.

MR. MORLEY

The total expenditure from public funds upon elementary education in India during 1904–05 (which is the latest year for which figures are available) is stated by the Government of India at £578,067, but this does not in elude the cost of inspection, or the expenditure on children receiving elementary instruction in secondary schools, which cannot be separately shown. The number of children attending public elementary schools during the same year was 3,627,000.
