§ MR. LONSDALETo ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that in the north of Ireland there is a desire for the teaching of mathematics, French, and Latin as extra subjects in elementary schools; whether he has decided to restore the payment of fees for such extra subjects; and whether he will adopt the equitable method of paying the same fee for each extra.
(Answered by Mr. Bryce.) I am not aware that, outside teachers' associations, any such desire has hitherto found expression. The subjects in question can hardly be considered to be within the scope of Irish primary education, and, as I have already pointed out, when extra fees in these subjects were given, comparatively few schools took advantage of the privilege. It is not intended to restore the payment of extra fees for these subjects.
