HC Deb 10 May 1906 vol 156 c1492
MR. HAZLETON (Galway, N.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether an organised system of espionage is at present in force against the staff, including professional men and heads of branches, of the Board of Works, Dublin; whether an ex-policeman is specially detailed to watch the movements of the officials and report thereon; if so, can he say by whose authority this is being done; whether any similar system is in force in any other public department in Ireland; and whether steps will be taken to put an end to it.

THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. MCKENNA,) Monmouthshire, N.

I have made inquiries and I can find no foundation for the statement that any system of espionage is in force either amongst the staff of the Board of Works or in any other public department in Ireland.
