WEIR (ROSS and Cromarty)I beg to ask the Secretary to the Admiralty if he will state how many cadets have been selected for training at the Royal Naval College, Osborne, since the college was established; in how many instances parents or guardians have been required to withdraw cadets on account of the inability of such youths to show satisfactory progress in such training; and, having regard to the fact that such cadets were originally examined and passed by a Board of Admiralty, will he state in what way parents or guardians have been compensated for their expenditure on. uniform and training.
§ MR. EDMUND ROBERTSON588 cadets have been appointed for training, at the Royal Naval College, Osborne, since the college was opened in September, 1903, of which number forty-three have been withdrawn on account of unsatisfactory progress. Parents enter their sons under the condition that if satisfactory progress is not made they are to be withdrawn.
