HC Deb 08 May 1906 vol 156 cc1153-4
MR. FIELD

To ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether he can state the amount of money granted for the compilation of an authentic history of the Boer War; and whether he can state how far the work has progressed, and when it is expected it will be published.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Haldane.) It is estimated that the cost of the official History of the South African War will have amounted from first to last to at least £.27,000; of this sum the amount expended up to March 31st, 1906, was about £22,000. Against this sum there will be profits from its sale which have not been and cannot be estimated. The first volume will probably be out by midsummer, the second and third volumes about the end of the year, and the concluding volume in 1907.
