HC Deb 03 May 1906 vol 156 cc720-1
MR. WILLIAM REDMOND (Clare, E.)

I beg to ask the Postmaster-General whether the examinations for sorters in the General Post Office are all held in London only; and, if so, whether, for the convenience of Irish candidates, examinations could be also held in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, and other Irish centres.

THE POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. SYDNEY BUXTON,) Tower Hamlets, Poplar

Examinations for London sorter-ships are held in London only. It is the general practice of my Department in recruiting this class, and the class of sorting clerks and telegraphists throughout the kingdom, to hold local examinations for local vacancies.

MR. WILLIAM REDMOND

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the great inconvenience and expense caused to candidates from Ireland?

MR. SYDNEY BUXTON

Yes, but there would also be great difficulty and expense if the opposite course were adopted.
