HC Deb 03 May 1906 vol 156 cc717-8
MR. J. RAMSAY MACDONALD

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department upon what principle the extra allowance of £25 has been alloted to ten assistant factory inspectors; and whether he proposes to limit the number who receive this extra allowance to ten.

* Mr. GLADSTONE

On the recommendation of my predecessor, the Treasury recently sanctioned the grant † See Col. 554. of ten allowances (including one already in existence) of £25, to be given to assistants doing specially responsible work. The assistants to whom the allowances have been alloted were selected after due consideration of the qualifications and length of service of the different members of the class. As I have already stated the question of the position of the inspector's assistants is now under my consideration.
