HC Deb 02 May 1906 vol 156 cc552-3
MR. LYNCH (Yorkshire, W. R., Ripon)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India, what progress has been made with the extension of the railway from Peshawar towards the Afghan frontier; and whether, in view of the effect of the penetration of Russian influence into Persia during recent years upon the frontier problem in India, he will refuse to sanction the expenditure of large sums of money in connection with railways on the north-west frontier.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Mr. JOHN MORLEY,) Montrose Burghs

I stated on February 26th that a railway 22½ miles in length was under construction, from a point near Jamrud on the existing line to a point on the Kabul river.† Any proposals that may be received for further railway construction towards the Afghan frontier will receive most careful consideration from the financial and other points of view indicated in the hon. Member's Question.
