HC Deb 01 May 1906 vol 156 cc393-4
CAPTAIN FABER

To ask the Secretary of State for War whether there is any prize money in existence from the Afghan War of 1879 still unissued to the troops engaged; and whether he is aware that Lord Roberts in General Orders said that the prize money would be distributed as soon as possible.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Morley.) I am not aware of the existence of the General Order referred to by the hon. Member. The Division Order issued by Lieutenant-General Sir F. Roberts on November 20th, 1879, which authorised the formation of a prize committee and the preparation of prize rolls, expressly warned the troops that its appointment in no way entitled them to claim the prize. Subsequently the prize was taken over by the Government of India and the issue of donation batta was sanctioned.
