HC Deb 29 March 1906 vol 154 cc1532-3
MR. T. HART-DAVIES (Hackney, N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether the orders for the total abolition of flogging in His Majesty's services will also be extended to His Majesty's Native Indian Army.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Mr. JOHN MORLEY,) Montrose Burghs

I am advised that the punishment of flogging under the Indian Articles of War is not frequently resorted to in the Native Army. This is all the more reason why flogging should go, and I will communicate with the Government of India. See (4) Debates, cliv., 1260.

LORD HELMSLEY

Will the right hon. Gentleman ask for a Return of the number of cases of flogging in the Indian Army, together with the offences for which the punishment was inflicted?

MR. JOHN MORLEY

I will consider that.
