HC Deb 27 March 1906 vol 154 cc1047-8
MR. HILLS (Durham)

To ask the Under - Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in view of the importance of the subject, he will take immediate steps to ascertain the mortality per thousand of white labourers working in the Transvaal gold mines, as distinguished from the mortality among the white population generally.

(Answered by Mr. Churchill.) I regret that my previous Answer to the hon. Member on this point was not quite accurate. The Secretary of State has not the figures of mortality among white miners in the Transvaal for the whole of 1905, but the figures for the quarter ended 30th September, 1905, are given as 23.657 per thousand (see p. 45 of Cd. 2819). For the two previous quarters they were 19.407 and 19.711.
