HC Deb 27 March 1906 vol 154 cc1076-7
MR. BARNES (Glasgow, Blackfriars)

I beg to ask the Secretary for Scotland whether he is aware that the Glasgow Parish Council have approved of new regulations for nurses in their employ, whereby the said nurses have had their average weekly hours of labour increased to seventy-one, and their maximum salaries reduced to £35; and seeing that the Exchequer gives maintenance grants towards these nurses' up-keep, does the Government intend to sanction the new regulations.

THE SECRETARY FOR SCOTLAND (Mr. SINCLAIR,) Forfarshire

The facts are as stated, but the Government has no power to interfere either with the regulations, or with the present distribution of the grant. The regulations will not come into force for some weeks, and a petition has now been presented to the Council by the nurses asking that they may have each alternate Sunday off duty, which I am informed will meet their wishes.
